1. Who do you want to become in the future?
In your professional life, do you prefer to become a musician, Dj, sound designer, sound engineer,
movie score composer or … maybe you want to design sounds for gaming companies,
therefor you have to choose your path before you start!
2. what should you know to achieve your goals?
what should you know to achieve your goals? if this is your question, stay with me! this video is for you!
3. How much does it take?
the very most common question which my students ask me about, is, how much it takes me, till i become like my favorite artist?
most of them think they can become a professional in 2 or 3 months! and this is impossible. yeas?!
they have no idea, how much is actually out there, and they think, there is a knob that, by rotating it, the music will come out!
they didn’t pay attention to the years and years of trying, losing, bad sounding, bad arranging, and lot more. they just want to release something! no matter what!
4. how much actually is out there to learn about music?
this is a very though question. actually there are tons of knowledge that you can learn to produce your music with different ideas and philosophies. you can learn how to code and make your music with codes. or you can design a synthesizer, and with your own synth, you can design sounds that you will use it in your music. or you can design a visual instead and let the sound follow your visual. maybe you want to be a live act performer like king Richie Howtin who combine lots of ideas with each other or like lots of other great live act artists.
let’s come back to our subject. how much actually is out there to learn about music?
at first you have to know the fundamentals of music theory. this is one of the most important thing that you have to learn and practice. that’s why we call it fundamentals. it’s about knowing notes, scales, modes, chords, intervals, rhythms, harmonics. then you can go further into cadences, textures, melodic organization, counterpoint and the list is going on and on. the techniques which we use in our century, is awesome and sometimes, wired for someone who is new to this genre.
then you should learn how you can use your D.A.W [ or digital audio workstation] and the abilities that your D.A.W have.
I use Ableton live suite for my productions with some flavors that comes from my vsts or effectors that I am designed in max/msp, and some other vst plugins. In the digital world there are lot of stuffs there, such as : sequencers, stutters, beat grids, effectors, real-time data analytics, and lot more …
it’s about knowing your genre, style and techniques, those are required for your music, to sounds in style. and this is just the beginning. you can combine different genres together. find the most important element of different genres and compose them together to create new attractive, complex atmospheres.
so how much you want to learn, in this infinite world?
5. studio artist vs. live act performance artist
are you going to become a studio artist or maybe you prefer to become a live act performance artist?
the studio producers, work in the studio and try to produce in the studio with acoustic environments. they can check melodies, Rerecord the vocals or instruments. And also have time to correct things. but live act performance must manage everything in real-time.
maybe there is a melody and you should play it. if you play the note wrong, it will kill the mood. Maybe you want to create a beat or groove instantly, according to the people, listeners or dancers’ mood swings. in this way, you can add flavors in real-time to your music.
so are you going to become a studio artist or you prefer to become a live act performance artist?
6. what is sound designing?
sound designers, try to design sounds in different ways, with different techniques and ideologies using synthesizers or modulars.
sound designing is divided into 2 sections. 1st: sound synthesis that generate the sound. And for your designing, you can use additive synthesis or subtractive synthesis. these are some ways, you can merge sound and produce more complex wave shapes. and the 2nd is: signal processing that is about manipulating sounds in different ways. like the way effectors change and manipulate the sounds.
so sound designers’ goals are to design clean, beautiful, attractive, powerful sounds to use in their music or maybe for selling sounds in sample packs.
7. what is sound engineering?
Sound engineers usually involve with micing in studio or stage and try to record more realistic sounds with, great quality. They must know when they should use different patterns for recording. For example, Omni vs. cardioid or figure of 8. The sound engineers should know how, instruments sound in spectrum and the ways they should eq, and compress that instrument. for recording sounds, they use different setups in studio vs. stages. For example, when they would use, condenser microphones & when they use dynamic, ribbon or other types of mics. in other side, sound engineers should have a great hearing ability and could difference between a perfect sound with a good sound. they must train, their hearing abilities with aural training, to hear the smallest changing in pitch, color, or tuning system. That how they can manage lots of sounds in their correct places with a nice sounding, and you can’t anywhere find any frequency war in your spectrum.
8. Think outside of the box
when you are going for creativity, this is one of the most important element. In these days you can see most of the musics are similar to each other. Sometime they are exactly the same. to solve this problem, you must know the rules and structure of music production; The rules in the music theory, the abilities that your D.A.W gives you, the techniques that you should use to sound in your genre & style. These are essential for producing music. If you don’t know the structure how can you deconstruct it?
Find the elements of your music genre and try to go cross the critical areas of that genre to create new atmospheres and maybe you will find a new genre, that wasn’t there before. Think beyond the way of old theories and structures & find a new one. Sound unique, like yourself.
As you know the genre dubstep wasn’t out there many years ago. yes, it’s come from dub but it’s in a whole new way. and in time it become a new genre that lots of people die for it.
9. Tastes of music
Different people, love different music genre and different styles. because they have different tastes and different ideals and experiences. So they love diverse aspects of music. So you will see people who wouldn’t like specific genre, or strongly prefer one or two types of genres.
There isn’t any rule that determine how you must produce your music. For sure there is something like quality factor, but you can design rhythmic or arrhythmic music, you can choose to use tonality in your music, or maybe you just like atonal musics. there isn’t any right or wrong here, and always there will be lovers and haters, no matter what you do. so is it possible to make a music that everybody loves?
10. Music industry and business
Let’s go to the next STEP, and imagine you finished your music. Now how could you make money with your music? First you must find a label record which releases musics in your genre and style. Then you need to have a contract with that label to get your percentage from selling the music, And the label will publish your track in lots of platforms. The percentage will depend on your experience, releases, fans, how famous you are, how much time you spend in the industry, and lots of different parameters. The percentage is something about 30% up to 70% depends on the parameters that I told you that effects your percentage.
Beside this, you can earn money from different jobs as well. Like working for a gaming company to design sounds; Or you can sell your sound in sample packs and make money out of that; Or compose music for movies and work for the movie industry, or maybe go and get some gigs and play your music in the festivals, clubs, or anywhere you could earn money with your art.
NFT is another way to sell your art in crypto world and it’s the future for artists. Now we can see lots of artist selling their art in NFT, and with good managing and advertising, they can make lots of money with that.
In our timeline we can earn money with music. It’s fun and you will earn money with luxury of happiness and tons of noises for sure!
